Ember Skies (2025)
100cm x 75cm
Ember Skies captures the raw, fleeting energy of a world caught between fire and silence. It evokes the smouldering pause after a storm or the glowing breath of a distant eruption—an elemental memory suspended in a slow exhale of light. The upper half of the canvas burns with soft, diffused warmth, while the foreground seethes with textured depth, scorched and luminous all at once.
The painting was built in layers—thin washes of ochre and rose were first feathered across the canvas, forming an almost flesh-like sky. Heat blooms were coaxed out with dry blending and circular brushwork, allowing light to emerge from beneath the surface. The ground below—more tactile and brooding—was created with thick-bodied mediums and palette knife work, scraped, dragged, and reworked until the earth felt alive with tension. Splashes of white were added late in the process, using a flick of loaded brush and instinct, to give the illusion of molten flare or reflected brilliance.
"Ember Skies" invites the viewer into a landscape of feeling more than place—a space where destruction and beauty meet in a quiet, powerful afterglow.
